Joan of Arc

French military heroine of the Hundred Years' War.

Joan of Arc was a young fifteenth-century French visionary and military-associated figure who supported Charles VII during the Hundred Years’ War, was captured, tried for heresy, and executed in 1431. Her public role combined claimed divine guidance, symbolic legitimacy, participation in campaigns and sieges, court examination, gender-nonconforming military dress under necessity, and later martyr and national-saint traditions.
