# Socrates

Socrates lived in fifth-century BCE Athens and was tried and executed in 399 BCE; he left no writings, so the surviving portrait is reconstructed from divergent witnesses. His enduring contribution is a model of public ethical inquiry built around questioning, refutation, acknowledgement of ignorance, and scrutiny of how one ought to live.
